Daniele Funaro was born in 1958. He studied in Pisa (Scuola Normale Superiore) and Pavia, where he got the Degree in Mathematics in 1981. He has been student of the Institute of High Mathematics in Rome (INDAM). His career started with a researcher  position at the University of Pavia. From 1992 to 1995 he was Associate Professor of Analysis at the Science Faculty of the University of Pavia. Since 1995 he is Full Professor of Numerical Analysis at  the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. In Modena, he has been Director of the Computer Center from 1997 to 2000, and  Chairman of the Department of Mathematics from 2000 to 2007.

His research has been mainly focussed on numerical techniques for the approximation of partial differential equations, with  special concern for high-order methods. On this subject, he published two monographs with Springer-Verlag (Lecture Notes in Physics, m8, 1992, and Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering, n.1, 1997). He published more than 40 papers, the most of them single-authored and placed in good journals. In the last 20 years, his interest has shifted on the physical modelling of electromagnetic phenomena. The results are collected in a couple of monographs published by World Scientific, Singapore, in 2008 (Electromagnetism and the Structure of Matter) and 2019 (From Photons to Atoms, The Electromagnetic Nature of Matter).

He attended many international conferences, also as invited speaker. He delivered talks, seminars and summer courses in many universities and research institutes in Italy and abroad. He has been long-term visiting professor in several universities in the USA (such as, for instance, Brown University and UCLA) and research centers (ICASE at NASA Langley, VA, and Los Alamos National Lab., NM). He has been member of the editorial board of several journals. He has been coordinator of research projects both for the Italian Minister of Research and the Italian National Research Council. He has been also member of various scientific committees.
